Alaska Highway Flight – An Adventure (DVD)

Alaska was a life-changing experience for myself and for many others. For those desiring to fly the amazing and rugged route along the famous Alaskan highway, through the Yukon Territory and into Central Alaska, this DVD production offers safety tips and advisable routes.

Alaskan Highway Flight – An Adventure is not quite as enthralling or action-packed as its name slyly implies. It’s a low budget production with a hazy picture and muddled sound, but the advice and tips are sound and the intention honorable. The DVD begins with a reading of the ever-popular High Flight and a lowdown of the scenic and adventurous wonders of the state and surrounding Canadian territories.

A nice bonus to pilots watching this production as an addition to their proper flight planning tools are the in-flight videos of airport/airstrip approaches. Also included are tips on survival supplies, camping, and the historical background of the Alaskan Highway and many of the scenic areas en route. The 28-page accompanying booklet is a written transcript of the DVD with the addition of an Airport Directory.

Pointing out the best scenic and historical sights to see along the way, Alaska lists weather and emergency stations in addition to the best landing sites. Helpful but slightly mind-numbing, the drab narration is probably only remotely captivating if you are high on adrenaline over an upcoming expedition to the said locations. Still, the product is unique and will prove useful for any pilot planning the ultimate cross-country experience.
